By: Tipsdekho

Eyeliner might seem daunting at first but with these easy eyeliner tips, you’ll soon be a pro. Follow these tips and tricks on how to apply eyeliner, from the perfect feline flick to alternative eyeliner looks.

Know the difference between pencil, gel and liquid

Know your eyeliners.

There are three main types of eyeliner:

  1. Pencil – matte and easy to apply, this is a great eyeliner for novices. Does not spread as smoothly as gel or liquid, but mistakes can be easily blended for a smokey eye effect.
  2. Gel – mostly come in matte effect, they apply very smoothly. Can be used for both thin and thicker lines.
  3. Liquid – create precision lines. Most have a pen or nib to apply, like a felt tip pen. Create a very thin line but can be used for a thicker effect, too.

Easy-to-apply liquid eyeliner: connect the dots

Use this easy-to-follow guide from Maybeline on how to connect the dots and create a smooth liquid line. Using dots is one of the best eyeliner tips out there!

Or fill in the dashes for the perfect gel line

Easier in segments.

You can also try dashes instead of dots, as shown here at The Glossy. This technique works fantastically well with a flat edged gel eyeliner like Benefit’s They’re Real push-up liner.

  1. Stamp 3 dashes along the upper lash line
  2. Connect the dashes with small strokes
  3. Thicken the line by sweeping over it in one stroke
  4. You’re done!

This is truly easy eyeliner!

Easy eyeliner using soft and sharp lines

Pick a look!

There are so many eyeliner tips – experiment with soft and sharp lines to see what suits you best. Liquid and gel eyeliner works best for sharp lines while kohl can be blended with a smudge brush for a softer look.

 Tightlining eyeliner

Softens the look.

If you feel liquid eyeliner looks a little too harsh on your eyes and you’d like to soften the contrast between your upper and lower eyelids, try tightlining. This is the technique for drawing eyeliner beneath your upper lash line so there is no visible space between your eyelid and eyeliner line. For the full tutorial visit Beauty Lish.

You can also use tightlining for creating a more subtle look by only lining the inside of your eyelids.

If you’re looking for more easy eyeliner options, this could be just the thing.

If struggle to apply liquid eyeliner or have a shaky hand, line your eyes with a pencil eyeliner first then trace over it with liquid – it makes the perfect template!

 Gel eyeliner hack

Gently melt it.

Gel can be easier to apply than liquid when you want to create a very thick line. Make your own version by melting your kohl eyeliner pencil with a lighter, and applying it with a small brush.

Essential eyeliner tips that everyone should know

It makes a difference.

There are some eyeliner tips that everyone should know, and this is certainly one of them!

When you’re applying your eyeliner, particularly liquid, avoid pulling the skin around the eye back as it’s more likely to smudge. If your line isn’t perfect, grab a cotton wool swab soaked in makeup remover, or a petroleum jelly, and tidy up any mistakes. It’s far less stressful to correct a mistake rather than striving for perfection the first time.

 Use concealer to camouflage mistakes

Sometimes trying to remove smudges can ruin the rest of your perfectly applied eyeliner. If it’s only a small mistake, grab the concealer. You can camouflage any smudges and nobody will be none the wiser.

Find the perfect eyeliner look for your eye shape

Emphasise your eye shape.

Smokey, cat eyes – there are so many different eyeliner looks, it’s hard to tell what look suits you best. Identify your eye shape using this guide by Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire and learn how to create the perfect look for your peepers.

Use tape to perfect your cat flick

Great hack.

Here’s another easy eyeliner tip for you.

Take a snippet of tape, repeatedly place it down and rip it off a surface until it loses some of it’s stick then place it alongside your eye as a template. Check out the Elle guide to using tape to perfect your liquid eyeliner – they make it look easy!

Use a credit card for the perfect winged look

Neat trick.

Get your credit card out or another other card in your purse with a flat edge and a curve, and use it to trace a line with your liquid eyeliner. Copy the image above of use the curved edge to trace, just imagine you’re tracing around a Nike tick.

 Spoon eyeliner

Youtube blogger Sasakiasahi has nailed easy eyeliner by using a spoon to craft the amazing looks seen in the video above.

Try the eye-opening ombre eyeliner effect

Eyeliner tips are all about enhancing your natural beauty – make your eyes look bigger with this stunning ombre effect.

It’s a lot easier to achieve than it looks, simply start by lining the first three quarters of your upper lash line with a light eyeliner. White and gold both work beautifully. Then grab a darker eyeliner and line from the outside corner of your eye in the middle then grab a smudge brush or eyeshadow brush and gently blend the middle so the colours overlap.

 Freeze a crumbling eyeliner

Freezy does it.

If your eyeliner is crumbling or leaving tiny nits of residue on your face, freeze your eyeliner for 5-10 minutes before applying. It’ll help keep it solid.

Make your eyes look bigger with WHITE eyeliner

Bright eyed (and bushy tailed).

This is a great tip for anyone with smaller eyes. Black eyeliner can make them look smaller, but there is no need to forgo it all together. Just line your lower lash line with white eyeliner to make them look bigger.

 Mascara doubles up as eyeliner

Handy to know.

Take a lip liner brush and swipe it over your mascara for a makeshift eyeliner.

Curl your lashes and apply eyeliner in one!

2 in 1 make up trick!

Save time while applying your eyeliner!

Apply pencil eyeliner to the top of your eyelash curlers to imprint kohl onto your upper lash line. You can also apply it to the underside to recreate the tightlining effect.

Great when you’re in a hurry.

Can’t commit to eyeliner? Use eyeshadow as a faux-eyeliner

Subtle yet stunning.

If you’re not quite ready to commit to eyeliner or you’ve decide it just isn’t right for you, try using a darker eyeshadow as a faux eyeliner. Use a liner brush to press a darker colour right into your lash line for a similar effect.

 Wing eyeliner look

Not as hard as it looks.

Winged eyeliner can look amazing, but it’s tricky to master. Break it down into the 6 stages above, and you’ll find it a lot easier to pull off. To get the perfect angle for your face, at stage 1 hold the eyeliner diagonally on your face from the corner of your nostril up to the corner of your eye.

EXPERIMENT with white eyeliner and other amazing looks

White is the new black!

Try this white eyeliner look inspired by Kim Kardashian. Eyeliner doesn’t always have to be dark, there are loads of other ways to line your eyelids to stunning effect.
